A Newcastle woman who tried to swindle more than £150,000 out of her grandmother and fiancé has been ordered to repay only £1. Emma Charlton admitted guilt on 23 charges of fraud and theft and was jailed for three years in March.

According to evidence in court, Charlton used the check books of her grandmother and fiancé in buying goods. Not all checks were cashed, and she managed to defraud them of only £26,704.

At a proceeds of crime hearing in Newcastle she was ordered to repay £1, as she was penniless. Judge Brian Forster stated that due to the fact that she had no assets, he had to make a nominal finding in the sum of £1.
