The Serious Fraud Office in Britain recently and temporarily had no idea where thousands of documents it had gathered in an investigation amid allegations of corruption at BAE Systems PLC, a British military contractor.

The main investigators said about 32,000 documents as well as media devices were accidently sent to the wrong place after the agency ended its inquiry into defense company.

According to the SFO, a party that provided some of the evidence had asked for it back but it accidentally got material from about 60 other sources collected from May and October 2012.

The agency did not say where the information was sent but that roughly 98 percent of the documents that had been missing were found. None of the missing data is related to national security, said the SFO.

When investigators in both the United States and United Kingdom began their investigation, BAE had been suspected of using bribes to attain contracts in Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The company eventually paid millions of dollars to settle the issue in 2010 wit British and American authorities.
