Massachusetts local law enforcement and state welfare officials can now check into all allegations in the trafficking of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP) benefits, formerly known as Food Stamps.

State officials and John Polanowicz, secretary of Health and Human Services, will soon announce the agreement along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service Northeast Administer James Arena-Derosa.

Polanowicz said most of the trafficking that takes place occurs at the small-time convenience and local shops. It’s not usually seen with the big-name supermarkets.

According to officials, the agreement will boost the program’s integrity and protect the benefits for people who actually need them.

The agreement came about thanks to the state’s Department of Transitional Assistance program that noted extensive fraud and waste in the public benefits program.

According to the Polanowicz, the latest restrictions have resulted in the declining number of replacement electronic benefit transfer cards being requested.

Polanowicz said the idea is to deal with any issues that deal with abuse and fraud, as the abuse causes people who actually need gthe service to not get it. With the agreement, people who need these types of programs will get the help they need.
