Facebook will soon begin scanning conversations and posts of its users for 'criminal activity'. If the social network notes suspicious behavior, then they will be considering at further steps, including informing the police, if necessary.

The focus is on conversations between people who have a 'casual relationship', for example if two people are only just friends or if they have no shared friends. Special software looks at certain expressions that indicate criminal activity. If criminal behavior is detected, appropriate steps will be taken to ensure the safety of its users.

The analysis of these statuses and conversations will take place before any employee of Facebook can understand the conversations. "We never want to create an environment in which employees look to private conversations. It is therefore important that we use technology that has only a small margin of error,” said Joe Sullivan, head of security at Facebook told Reuters.

Law enforcement officers in America are pleased that Facebook are performing the scans. Thus, on March 9th, a ‘suspicious’ conversation between a 30-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl was caught, in which the man attempted to make an appointment. Facebook sent the information to the police leading to an arrest. "The speed with which Facebook gave us the information, enabled us to respond quickly," said Jeffrey Duncan of the police in Florida.
