Yet another episode of internet scam was reported in the Ghanaian Chronicle (http://ghanaian-chronicle.com), where an unemployed 25-year-old Nigerian is on trial at an Accra circuit court for allegedly stealing approximately $28,000 that belonged to the CEO of an Accra quarry operating business known as ESM Company Limited.

Jose Gidoen Olawele is alleged to have stolen the money by committing an Internet fraud activity. Olawele, according to ASP Cletus Abadamlora, prosecutor for the case, is just one of many folks that perpetrate Internet fraud by hacking into emails and watching their communication.

Abadamlora said when hackers realized email account owners were anticipating money from folks overseas, they would block them from being able to access their email accounts. He said the hackers would then convince those folks to send money into bank accounts intended for the original email owners, which they would withdraw right away.

Olawele, Abadamlora said, used similar means to steal money from the CEO’s bank account.Olawele was charged with two counts of stealing and pled not guilty before Mrs. Patience Mills-Tetteh in court.

He was granted bail for a total of GH˘20,000.00 with two securities.

According to the complaint, on April 21, 2011, Olawele broke into the CEO’s email account, acting as him and used the identity to persuade a Dubai company to work with him.

The prosecutor said Ritchie Brothers owed the CEO the $28,000 and was convinced to allocate money into the Osu Branch of Guarantee Trust GT Bank. Abadamlora said the Ritchie Brothers didn’t hesitate to send the money on two separate dates to the defendant’s account.

The matter was quickly discovered to be fraudulent and reported immediately to the Documentation and Visa Fraud division of the CID headquarters for police to investigate.

Abadamlora said a GT bank investigation showed the accused had withdrawn both transfers and that under a few undercover setups, Olawele was arrested and a refund has been made to GH.
